Tallahassee Man Sentenced in Deadly Shooting over Cell Phone

Court records show that Thomas Barton entered a no contest plea to second degree murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. That sentence was handed down back on November 15th.

Leon County Sheriff's Office Release

At 5:36 pm on Monday, July 23, 2012, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at 7471 Wren Drive, in southwestern Leon County. Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the disturbance had escalated and 31 year old James F. Burke was dead inside the residence. Crime Scene Detectives processed the scene for forensic evidence while Violent Crimes Detectives conducted witness interviews.

Deputies and detectives learned that Burke became upset with his mother, Charlotte Burke, over the use of a phone. While Burke and his mother were talking about the phone, 52 year old Thomas M. Barton, walked to a bedroom, returned with a shotgun and fired multiple shots. At least one shot struck James Burke, killing him. Barton was interviewed at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. He acknowledged his involvement in this incident. Barton was taken to the Leon County Jail.

Leon County Sheriff Larry Campbell stated, “This death was caused by a senseless act of violence without any regard for human life. I am glad this man is off our streets. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, especially the victim’s mother who witnessed the death of her child.”

On August 22, 2012, the Leon County Grand Jury indicted Barton on the charge of First Degree Murder.

Authorities have charged a man with murder in connection with a body found inside a local home.
It happened yesterday Tuesday on the southwest side of Leon County.

Leon County Sheriff Deputies released more information about what they call the suspicious death of a man. Deputies arrested Thomas Barton yesterday after they received a call about a disturbance.
That call came in around 5:30 pm Monday. Deputies arrived at 7471 Wren Drive, where they found the body of a man whose name they aren't releasing at this time.

We are also waiting to hear about a motive and how the two knew each other. What deputies tell us now is that all people involved in this case are accounted for.

Barton, the man arrested, is being charged with murder.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office got a call just after 5:30 this evening about a disturbance in the 7400 block of Wren Drive in Tallahassee.
When they arrived they found a body in that home.
Right now deputies are not releasing too many details about the victim or any possible suspects.
