On June 20, 2012 the Leon County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation in reference to the theft of a residential air conditioning unit from a residence in the 500 block of Long Pine Drive. A witness provided a vehicle description and advised that the air conditioning unit was in the bed of the truck.

At approximately 4:30 pm, Deputy Matt Shaut observed a red Dodge truck matching the description in the Long Pine Drive theft at Leon Iron and Metal recycling business on Aenon Church Road. Deputy
Shaut, a 9 year veteran patrol deputy, initiated contact with the driver of the truck and asked him for his identification. The man, later identified as Moses Hall IV, 33, told Deputy Shaut his identification was in the truck and walked toward it. When he reached his truck, Hall quickly got into his truck and began driving in the direction of Deputy Shaut. Deputy Shaut unholstered his agency issued sidearm and
fired at least three shots toward Hall. Hall was struck once in the shoulder area. Deputy Shaut was struck by the right front corner of Hall’s truck and knocked to the ground. Hall continued to flee the
area, but drove the truck into a large iron gate near the entrance/exit area. The force of the collision with the gate spun Hall’s truck around and sent it rolling into Deputy Shaut’s marked patrol car.

Deputy Shaut was treated and released from an area hospital Deputy Shaut sustained bruises and abrasions. Hall sustained a non-life threatening bullet wound. Hall has been released from an area
hospital and transported to the Leon County Jail.

As a matter of procedure, Deputy Shaut is on administrative leave. An internal investigation is ongoing.
