Tallahassee, Florida --
On the evening of September 30, members of the Tallahassee Police Department's Community Policing Unit partnered with agents of the State Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco. The purpose of the operation was to ensure that establishments are not selling alcoholic beverages to underage persons. An adult under 21 years of age entered 14 establishments and attempted to purchase alcohol. Unfortunately, of the 14 establishments visited, five sold to the underage person. The employees who sold the alcohol were arrested and charged with Sale of an Alcoholic Beverage to a Person Under 21 Years of Age.
The intent of these operations is to emphasize the seriousness of keeping alcoholic beverages out of the hands of underage persons and to deter licensed establishments from selling alcohol to underage persons. Often law enforcement and medical personnel are called to the scene of various tragedies brought about by underage persons consuming alcoholic beverages. Law enforcement officers strongly encourage all establishments to closely monitor employees and ensure they are checking identification. If there is any doubt as to the age of the customer… do not make the sale. The Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco will gladly provide training to any establishment desiring to enhance the ability to detect underage consumers.
The Tallahassee Police Department and the State Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco are committed to keeping our citizens safe. Additional operations are planned for the near future.
