Drika Grandberry shops regularly at the Country Store in her Robertsville neighborhood in Quincy. But she was shocked to hear the news that the store clerk was shot Monday evening.
"She a good person, she greets people when you come in, she's real nice," says Grandberry.
"It's scary - And we live so far out in the country. It's frightening," says local resident Olivia Taswell.
The clerk and store owner, Karrme Halim, did not want to go on camera. But she says around 8:00 Monday night, a man came inside, put a gun to her face and demanded money. She says she turned over the cash but the robber still shot her in the stomach and left in a get-away car.
"Some of them who are robbing people are from around here and some of them aren't. But I don't think that's right," says Grandberry.
Halim is beefing up security. She's adding more cameras inside and outside.
"I hope the law enforcement catches them, especially in a community of elderly people. Someone needs to pay," says Taswell.
Gadsden County investigators have seen a spike in convenience store robberies. Now, they're patrolling more in hopes of putting an end to the crime.
"The Sheriff has been paying particular attention to our patrol division and their business checks which he started doing earlier this summer. So we're trying to be proactive in our efforts to secure our stores," says Ulysses Jenkins, Gadsden County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
