Fla. Panhandle Inmate Dies of Puncture Wounds

A Florida Department of Corrections spokesperson says an inmate died after being found on September 24th with multiple stab wounds while at the Northwest Florida Reception Center. FDOC would not release his name, but Eyewitness News has learned that the man was Richard Johnson. Johnson was sent to NWFRC in August of 2008 for burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and robbery. He was serving a 20 year sentence.

FDOC has identified a suspect but doesn't know a motive at this time.

There is a criminal investigation underway.


CHIPLEY, Fla. (AP) --

Prison officials say an inmate in a Florida Panhandle facility has died.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger says the
inmate was found with puncture wounds on Saturday in the
dormitory-style housing unit in Chipley, which is west of
Tallahassee. He was pronounced dead at a hospital on Saturday.

Plessinger did not release the inmate's name.

It's not clear whether the inmate was a victim of an attack or whether
his injures were an accident.

The Inspector General's Office is investigating.
