Bainbridge, GA - It may look like a simple hand shake between law enforcement officials, but to them it's much more. They say it's a sign of their commitment to serve and protect.

"It shows the public that we're all in unity and it's a collaborative effort and we all feel the same way about drinking and driving," said Sgt. Steve Jarrett with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

More than 150 state troopers and officials from Georgia, Alabama and Florida gathered at the Kirbo Center in Bainbridge Tuesday morning for the 22nd annual 'Hands Across the Border' campaign.

They say it's all in an effort to save lives by cracking down on drunk driving, texting behind the wheel, as well as seat belt violations and child safety restraints.

Law enforcement officials say the multi-state collaboration couldn't come at a better time. According to AAA, more than 29 million people are expected to hit the road for the upcoming Labor Day holiday and officials say, it's their main goal to make sure drivers arrive alive.

"We know if you're drinking and driving there is a strong possibility that you could impact somebody by killing them on our highways and we want to make sure we have a strong stance against that and if you are caught driving in Gadsden, you will go to jail," said Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young.

"We're going to find these drivers and put them where they belong, which is in the county jail," added Sgt. Jarrett.
