News Release: Madison County Sheriff's Office
July 22, 2014
MADISON, Fla. -- Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart is warning citizens of a recent scam occurring throughout Madison County.
Citizens have been receiving phone calls from individuals identifying themselves as representatives of a local electric company and attempting to collect outstanding balances on the homeowners' electric bill. These calls have occurred as recent as yesterday, July 21.
The individuals are advising that the electric bill is unpaid and crews will soon be en route to disconnect the power unless payment is immediately made. The immediate payment will stop any additional charges on the account for a reconnect fee after the electric crews have disconnected the power.
Sheriff Stewart states that this is not a normal practice that electric companies use and further cautions home owners to contact their local office before providing any personal information to include credit card numbers.
These activities are currently under investigation in Madison and if you feel that you have been a victim of such activity or even an attempt, please contact the Sheriff’s Office with any additional information at 850-973-4001.
