TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A Tampa man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he aimed a laser pointer at a police helicopter.

Tampa police say the crewmembers were on routine patrol near Robles Park early Friday morning when they saw the laser dot on their aircraft three times. The officers spotted the source of the light and watched a man run inside a home.

The helicopter crew directed officers on the ground to the home, where they found 29-year-old Jeremy Wayne Sumpter. During an interview, police say Sumpter admitted to destroying the pointer when he realized police had located his home.

The Tampa Tribune ( reports that Sumpter was charged with misuse of a laser lighting device. He was later released on $2,000 bail.
