Associated Press Release
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- A man has been arrested in central Florida seven months after authorities say he crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser and injured a trooper in South Florida.
FHP says 34-year-old Derek Adam Nelson was charged Monday with felony reckless driving, driving under the influence and reckless driving.
Officials say Nelson was speeding on I-95 in Fort Lauderdale in December when he struck Trooper Felecia Andrews' parked cruiser, slamming it into a wall. Andrews was working on an accident report at the time of the crash. Authorities say the impact pushed the cruiser into the vehicles of the earlier crash.
The Miami Herald reports that Andrews is still recovering from her injuries and has not returned to work.
Nelson was taken to Orange County Jail and will be extradited to South Florida.
