SWEETWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Police in a southwest Florida city say an autistic man was kept in "dungeon-like" conditions in his mother's mobile home.

Police in Sweetwater, in Miami-Dade County, told the Miami Herald they received an anonymous call Thursday stating that a 30-year-old man was being kept locked up in a home. The caller reported that the man's mother left him alone in the house for long periods.

Police spokeswoman Michelle Hammontree-Garcia said authorities went by the home and found a small room with a mattress, a "blacked-out window" and an iron door that locked only from the outside. She says the room had no bathroom and smelled of urine and feces.

When the unidentified mother and son returned home, the woman was arrested and the man was transported to a hospital with scratches and bruises. Police say charges are pending against the mother.
