The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office has been called to investigate a rash of vehicle burglary complaints in recent weeks, according to Sheriff David Harvey. But residents can cut down on their chances of becoming a victim by locking their vehicles.

“A number of these cases involve women’s purses,” said Sheriff Harvey. “The purses were left in unlocked vehicles where they became easy prey for someone testing to see if the car doors were locked.”

The sheriff added that only a small number of the vehicle burglaries involved damage to the vehicle as the perpetrators are seeking out unlocked vehicles for easier access. In addition to stealing purses, unsecured firearms have been targeted.

“During past investigations the suspects have turned out to be juveniles and with school out for the summer it is best to lock your vehicle and protect yourself from theft,” the sheriff concluded.
