UPDATE 01-11-2010 at 6:15pm by Jerry Askin

A late night armed robbery ends up deadly after the robber is shot and killed by the clerk at a Tallahassee convenient store.

It all happened at the Bill's Mini Mart Convenient store on South Magnolia Drive around 10 pm Monday evening.

Tallahassee Police say 23-year old Andrew Hale entered the convenient store and demanded cash from the clerk. And that's when the tables turned, the clerk retrieved his personal handgun and shot and killed Hale right inside the store.

Nick Camechis who works next door from the convenient store says, "It was wrong for that man to come in and try to steal from him and it may have been him that done it before."

The store owner did not want to go on camera, but he says he's sorry for what happened to the robber, but he says the store clerk was simply doing what he had to do in self defense.

Nick Camechis says he believes it was the same robber that got away with cash after robbing the same store 10 days ago.

Camechis goes on to say, "The guy had no excuse and unfortunately he's dead because of a mistake he made....The people working in that convenient store are hard working people."

Tallahassee resident Arrington Williams says, "He gotta protect his life.. Who knows he could've let them rob his store and got away but who know he could've gotten shot and killed anyway."

Investigators say after the shooting, the clerk went out to the parking lot and began firing several shots at what appeared to be a get-a-way vehicle. Authorities believe there may have been an accomplice involved in the robbery.

We are still trying to get our hands on surveillance video.

Anyone with any information on other people involved in this robbery is urged to contact TPD or CRIMESTOPPERS at 850-574-TIPS.

I'm in my early 20's, licensed to carry, and in college. Any person that demands ANYTHING from me while "brandishing what appears to be a handgun", you will not like the end result. Things like this happen so fast and I would not chance my life over anyone's greed. The question is... are you quick enough to make split-second decisions that could save your life, as the valiant store clerk was?

it sad to hear, that a young black male has been killed in this end of days. But at the same time the clerk had to protect oneself. it was all in self defense, I should know i have worked in stores where people have come in and point a gun right in my face, not to mention i once used to work at the same store of bill minit mart, so i know the pressure of the perks of the job. but im sorry for the family loss.

I WANT TO TELL THE FAMILY THAT I AM SO SORRY. I KNOW ANDREW, AND ALL I CAN SAY THAT HE WAS TRULLY A WONDERFUL PERSON. WHY DID THIS PERSON THINK THAT THEY NEEDED TO TAKE THE LIFE OF ANOTHER. EVEN IF THE PERSON FELT THE NEED TO TO SHOOT SOMEONE THEY DID NOT HAVE TO KILL HIM. WHY KILL SOMEONE OVER MONEY? NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CARRY A GUN ON THE JOB.

The clerk was a hero. Way to go man. The robberys in Tallahssee have gotten out of control. These people need to be taught a lesson. You're right Johnnie Andrew Hell is the only guilty party. All this could've been avoided if he did'nt walk into that store and point a gun at a innocent person with a family of his own. If Andrew would've shot and killed the clerk I guarantee you would'nt be on here sticking up for the clerk. TPD did do their job. They let the man in right defend himself and continue earning for his family in the free world. And oh by the way. Do a little homework. The 10-20-life only applies when you commit a crime with a gun. The store clerk trying to stop the accomplices was'nt commiting a crime. Obviously he's a good shot. I dont think he would've strayed shots at any innocent people. So a message to the store clerk. You're a hero. And to TPD keep up the good work. In conclusion. Andrew did time in prison. Didnt learn a lesson.Had a kid.Did'nt grow up.Im over it. move on

ITS CRAZY HOW PEOPLE CAN SPEAK ON EVENTS THAT THEY DONT KNOW ABOUT ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DONT KNOW ANDREW AT ALL. GROWING UP I WAS TAUGHT THAT WHEN YOU DONT KNOW SOMETHING OR LACKING DETAILS YOU'RE SUPPOSE TO "SHUT UP", SO "6FEET UNDER" AND THE REST OF YOU PLEASE GET A LIFE. SINCE EVERYONE LIKES TO GOSSIP, LETS TALK ABOUT SOMEHTING A BIT MORE INTERESTING; WHY IS IT THAT WHEN THE CLERK KILLED HALE, THAT HE RAN OUT THE DOOR AND LET OFF SHOTS WHEN HE COULD HAVE HARMED AN INNCOENT PERSON WALKING OR DRIVING BY BUT I GUESS IN THE WHITE MAN'S EYE MR. HALE IS THE ONLY GUILTY PARTY. LAW SAYS THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF INSIDE YOUR HOME, STORE,ETC. SO IF HE KILLED SOMEONE OUTSIDE THE STORE AFTER HALE WAS DISARMED AND WOUNDED THEN WHAT WOULD BE SAID THEN? THE CLERK DID VERY MUCH SO DEFEND HIMSELF INSIDE HIS STORE BUT HE ALSO VIOLATED THE 10-20-LIFE WHEN HE RAN OUT THE STORE LETTING OFF SHOTS LIKE A WILD ANIMAL. ITS SEEEMS TO ME THERE ARE TWO THUGS INSTEAD OF ONE. TPD DO YOUR JOB!!!!!

Hello, my name is Matthew Baatz. I was incarcerated at the Lake City Correctional Facility during the same time as Brother Andrew. We were both involved in the FaithBased program there and I can speak from a first hand account on the character of this Brother in Christ. He was certainly touched by the Hand of God and many of the choices he made while there were certainly evidence of God's work in his life. My heart goes out to his family, because I know he is missed. The possibilty of wrongful death, given the responses and certain comments on the part of the local pd, 'possible handgun', and 'appeared to be', is likely. Also likely is fear, or uncertainty on Andrews part which could have allowed the Devil a little foot room in this situation. However the events unfolded that night, one thing is for certain; Andrew is now resting with the Lord and he is finaly at peace. And to those of you whom are leaving these comments of hate, you need to grow up and mature some. God Bless you!

Absolutley. There's a lot of us law abiding citizens carrying legal firearms ready to defend ourselves and property. The people sticking up for this criminal is disturbing. Once again people with their heads in the sand not wanting to take responsibilty for one of their owns actions. Going to church and being a good friend doesn't mean squat. First of all where are the people in the grey impala that were shot at?If they were innocent and minding their own business why didn't they call the police and say someone was shooting at them? Just left their buddy dying in the store. Some friends those were.Second of all. Stop acting like Andrew just walked in the store and was shot for nothing. Don't act stupid and insult peoples intelligence. Third of all I've seen people blaming the system and economy for his action. What about the store in this economy? That money in the register no matter how small amount was not Andrews. Taking that money takes food from that store owners kids mouths.

Let this be a lesson if not a warning to all you wanabes out there. There are thousands of us out here with concealed weapon permits. That means we legally carry firearms and will defend our businesses, familys and our lives at all cost. Stop trying to live out your favorite rap song or t.v. show. Ok so you go to church. And? So you listen to Tupacs song "Only God Can Judge Me" so you throw that around in the most annoying fashion possible. Andrew was a new father and he still didn't grow up. He spent time in prison and still didn't learn a lesson. He is not the victim here. Dont even try it! Whine WHINE WHINE its the economy, its the system. Look, its hard out here for everybody now days. All cultures and races are struggling. That gives no one the right to even threaten that they have a gun and try to take someone elses belongings that they've worked hard for. Good riddence Andrew Hale. The world is a little safer without you.

I am personally apologizing for insulting the character of the TPD. I've reread their original comments concerning the case and have read of the robberies on 1/17 and now realize they have their hands full fighting crime in this city. I know they know Andrew only had one charge in his life and had served his sentence. We are still only saying because he lived next door to that store that he could be innocent of this crime that cost him his life. I ask that they don't write Andrew off as one returning to a life of crime but find out if he actually did the crime and let us know. Also we as a community have to work and PRAY to deter the high spirits that rob us of our children and threaten the safety and peace of our community. Invest in our children and their parents, most of the parents are to young to have grabbed a hold of the responsibility needed to ensure their children are productive citizens. For "no child left behind" their parents can't be left behing either. I will help.
