Associated Press Release
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A newly-released email shows former Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett reached out to Jeb Bush and former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels about his decision to resign.
Bennett sent an impassioned email from his personal account to "part of my family." He told the two former governors before he notified the State Board of Education.
The email was released Friday by the Department of Education in response to a public records request.
Bennett said his life had been a "living hell" after The Associated Press reported that his staff in Indiana changed that state's school grading formula to benefit a top Republican donor's charter school.
Bennett resigned from his Florida job last week.
In the email, Bennett defends his actions but said he could not allow his family to endure more attacks.
