Associated Press Release
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) -- Thousands have gathered in Punta Gorda to mourn a deputy shot and killed while investigating a domestic disturbance in southwest Florida.
Gov. Rick Scott, fellow deputies and family members are remembering Sgt. Michael Wilson Saturday as a hero who will not be forgotten.
Wilson was killed Monday while responding to a fight at an apartment complex.
Investigators say Jay Vanko shot Wilson from the top of a stairwell, striking the deputy in the chest above his bullet-proof vest. Authorities say Vanko then turned the gun on himself.
Law enforcement colleagues recalled Wilson's smile, outgoing personality and how he never thought twice about going out on a call.
