PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Escambia County Sheriff's deputies climbed through a window while searching for a suspect and shot two dogs.

The incident happened Saturday night near Pensacola.

The Pensacola News Journal reports a 13-month-old blue pit bull named Gracie died. A 3-year-old bulldog mix named Rocky was shot in the leg and is recovering.

In a news release the sheriff's office said deputies believed an armed suspect frequented the couple's home. While checking the home's perimeter, they saw a bucket with a footprint on it under an open window. When no one came to the door, deputies went through the window to locate the suspect.

Cristina Moses and Travis Nicholas say deputies dragged them into the hallway.

The news release says the dogs were shot when they became aggressive.
