The sounds of these canons could be heard for miles. Dozens of actors took residents back in time to February 20th, 1864 where Confederates held their ground in the battle of Olustee.

Folks from Georgia and Florida came to watch the reenactment.

"I just think they do a really good job re-enacting it. I mean you have people out there that are really screaming and they have blood all over them," said Charity Wathen.

The Battle of Olustee is the largest civil War Battle fought in Florida. More than three-thousand either died, were wounded or went missing.

"It's really a sad thing that we had all these men fight for our country, north and south, brother against brother, it's sad to see," said Wathen.

But it's a part of history many residents say they're glad to know.

"I had ancestors that were on two different sides. I am part of each of them," said Jayden Ripp.

In a period where this country was at war... feelings of that triumphant day still flow with the wind.

A reason why many folks hope this tradition continues.

Organizers say because the weather cooperated so well, it allowed them to have one of the best attendances from people in the area.

This has got to be one of the top five battle reenactments in the country. Of the estimated 10,000 attendance- how many were Legislators and did the Governor attend to see how well this would have fit in closing this park as part of state "budget cuts"?

I remember when the first time they did this, my brother was one of the reenactment actors. It was GREAT watching, and enjoying the tents & fires, and the food.
