OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (AP) -- A suspected robber is in the hospital after being shot by the Oakland Park homeowner he was trying to rob.
The shooting happened Wednesday night near Fort Lauderdale after 45-year-old Kevin Madigan broke into the home of 73-year-old Charles Rieckman and took a television.
The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1dt6DUC ) reports the suspect was putting the TV in his getaway car when he saw a neighbor standing outside. He attacked her and tried to take her phone as she called authorities to report the robbery.
Rieckman got his gun and fired several shots at Madigan, who got into the car and drove away. He crashed a short distance away.
Deputies say he was taken to the hospital. His injuries were unclear.
The sheriff's office says the shooting will be treated as justifiable.
