Press Release: Florida Historic Capitol Museum
Tallahassee, FL, May 14, 2013- The Florida Historic Capitol Museum is pleased to announce that the re-installation of its iconic red and white striped awnings is underway. All eighty-two awnings were removed in November 2012, when MLD Architects and Childers Construction began work on the building's exterior as part of the continuing preservation of the historic structure. Cracks to the façade were repaired and the entire building exterior has been repainted.
The repairs and painting required the removal of the awnings and their frames. All existing frames were carefully numbered as they were removed, so they could be returned to their original locations with new red and white striped canvas awnings. Beginning Monday, May 13, the awnings began to be reinstalled. Awnings were carefully laid out on the front lawn of the Historic Capitol to facilitate their hanging.
The Historic Capitol's distinctive red and white striped awnings were used from the 1890s to the early 1920s. They were installed once again during the 1980s restoration that returned the structure to its historic 1902 appearance. The existing awnings are of the exact dimensions as the 1902 awnings and replicate the design with the exception of the current rigid frames, which were retractable in the earlier design.
The Historic Capitol Museum is open every day of the year with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the many exhibits located inside the historic building and, over the next few days, to watch the re-installation of the red and white striped awnings.
