Chipley, FL -- December 5, 2011 --
WCTV obtained new video Monday showing the Chipley High School football team's bus fully engulfed in flames after it blew a tire Friday on the way to Northview.
Senior runningback Ryan Mcyntire said at first he was in shock.
"It was like this can't be happening to us on such a big day," said Mcyntire.
Teammate Taylor Smelcer, who was sitting in the seat right above the tire that blew out, described the hectic scene that followed.
"We saw smoke, then the bus driver told us to get off, and everybody was just grabbing their stuff and getting off," said Smelcer.
After getting on the marching band's bus, the team eventually made it to the game with time to spare. Down fourteen points early on, head coach Rob Armstrong said just like the tire, his players started out flat.
"I was worried. They stopped us first series and we punted to them," said Armstrong.
But they didn't give up, and also like their bus, he said the players caught fire, scoring the winning touchdown with less than two minutes to go.
"Myers did a great job hitting Mcyntire in stride and it was nice seeing him cross that goal line," said Armstrong.
Bay Limousine said the bus was seventeen years old and the last safety check done on it was in June.
Meanwhile, the other scary incident happened on the way home. Coaches and team members said a driver was headed in the wrong direction on Interstate 10 in Walton County and almost slammed into them head-on.
"Our school resource officer swerved in front of us to keep him from hitting us, and ran us off the road. He pursued him, turned around and pursued him," said Mcyntire.
The Florida Highway Patrol was unavailable for comment Monday on either incident.
