Tallahassee, Florida- July 6, 2012
The City Commission will hold a final workshop on the proposed FY 2013 budget on Tuesday, July 10, beginning at 9 a.m. in the City Commission Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 300 South Adams St. This workshop will be broadcast live on WCOT (Comcast Cable channel 13) and also streamed live on Talgov.com.
City Manager Anita Favors Thompson released her recommended $686 million fiscal year 2013 operating budget on June 22 for review by the City Commission. The operating budget amount for FY 2013 is nearly $25 million less than the current (FY 2012) budget, and was reviewed by the Commission at a June 27 workshop.
Despite efforts to craft a balanced budget, however, City officials recently learned that a reduction in estimated revenue from local and state sources have left a shortfall in the general fund of $739,600. The shortfall is primarily due to reductions in local property valuations and revenue sharing and half-cent sales tax projections for FY 2013 from the State of Florida.
"Our initial budget figures were based on property valuation figures provided by the Leon County Property Appraisers Office in early June," said Raoul Lavin, director of the City's Department of Management and Administration. "But last Friday, we received an update from that office indicating an increase in the reduction of property values by a full one percent."
Lavin said that at Tuesday's workshop, budget staff will recommend a series of reductions to the Commission in order to keep the FY 2013 budget balanced.
City Commissioners will address the shortfall and other budget issues on July 10. Following Tuesday's workshop, two public hearings on the proposed FY 2013 budget will be held on September 12 and 19 (the September 12 date was previously listed as September 5). The new fiscal year begins October 1.
