Tallahassee, FL -– March 26, 2012 --

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam joined United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Undersecretary Kevin Concannon in Santa Rosa County today to celebrate the achievements of Bennett Russell Elementary School, which was awarded a USDA HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) Award for creating a healthier school environment by promoting nutrition and physical activity. Under Commissioner Putnam’s leadership, the number of Florida schools with a HUSSC distinction has more than doubled, bringing the total number of schools to 47.

“Florida’s HealthierUS School Challenge Award recipients are committed not only to the education of Florida’s children, but also to their health and well-being," said Commissioner Adam Putnam. "I look forward to working with our state’s schools to encourage efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, as demonstrated by schools like these so Florida can become a nationwide leader in promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyles.”

USDA established HUSSC in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have voluntarily created healthier school environments.
