Tallahassee, FL -- June 5, 2012 --

Deputies with the Leon County Sheriff's Office, or LCSO, say a corrections officer is charged with having sex with an inmate.

William J. Fletcher was arrested and fired from his job on Monday. He was a sixteen year veteran with the LCSO.

"The Sheriff's Office received the information that there may have been an inappropriate relationship between a correctional officer and a former Leon County work camp inmate. And that information was received the middle of last week. I believe it was May the thirtieth," said LT. James McQuaig with the LCSO.

Deputies interviewed the former inmate and then Fletcher. Both confirmed the relationship. Deputies say the relationship started back in November of 2011 when the inmate was serving her sentence.

"We learned of this, and we dealt with it swiftly. And, as an agency, we will not tolerate it," said McQuaig.

Fletcher had been in charge of supervising the inmates in the Sheriff's Office Work Camp since September of 2007. Inmates who report to the work camp are allowed to live at home while serving their sentence. Deputies said the sexual activity never occurred during work hours or on LCSO property.

Regardless of where or when it happened, sexual relations between officers and inmates are strictly forbidden.

"If you do the crime, then you need to pay your time. And you need to do the right thing, especially in the field that they do. You need to practice what you preach," said Jennifer Hutch, a Tallahassee resident.

Deputies say they will not be releasing the name of the inmate involved in this case. They say that is to protect her identity.

Fletcher was released on a $1000.00 bond.

If society and laws want to punish for "moral conduct" let's be fair and throw some of the numerous politicians guilty of such, same or worse behavior, under the bus as well. Most of the them do this stuff ON duty not off! I'm pretty sure the consequences for the actions are far worse from the spouse involved. Just one example, do you think Bill Clinton got off easy with Hillary?! I so doubt that happening behind closed doors. Just saying....

16 yrs. down the drain. What a shame. No woman is worth that. But just like a whole lot of other people, he made his own bad choices. He is the one who is going to have to live with it.

There is no such thing as "consensual" relations between an inmate and jailer...the power differential makes it impossible; which is why there are laws against it. It is like saying a 12 year old "consented."

It's called an inmate using her body seeking favoritism and a man dumb enough to fall for it. There is NO comparison between a low down, scumbag inmate and a child.

They fell in love. Leave it alone. There is more to the story then what the news tells. the news always makes the story worst then what it really is.

The only way the story could get "worst" (worse), is if they were caught on video and all the other correctional officers sat around watching the video with popcorn and drinks.

whats the problem if they both wanted it. It is a good perk for the officers who dont get paid much.

Well, if he had been a woman sleeping with male inmates, then he could have just resigned and it would have been swept under the carpet as is normal practice.

I don't think love is in this equation. You might want to ask his wife though.
