Tallahassee, FL -- June 5, 2012 --
Deputies with the Leon County Sheriff's Office, or LCSO, say a corrections officer is charged with having sex with an inmate.
William J. Fletcher was arrested and fired from his job on Monday. He was a sixteen year veteran with the LCSO.
"The Sheriff's Office received the information that there may have been an inappropriate relationship between a correctional officer and a former Leon County work camp inmate. And that information was received the middle of last week. I believe it was May the thirtieth," said LT. James McQuaig with the LCSO.
Deputies interviewed the former inmate and then Fletcher. Both confirmed the relationship. Deputies say the relationship started back in November of 2011 when the inmate was serving her sentence.
"We learned of this, and we dealt with it swiftly. And, as an agency, we will not tolerate it," said McQuaig.
Fletcher had been in charge of supervising the inmates in the Sheriff's Office Work Camp since September of 2007. Inmates who report to the work camp are allowed to live at home while serving their sentence. Deputies said the sexual activity never occurred during work hours or on LCSO property.
Regardless of where or when it happened, sexual relations between officers and inmates are strictly forbidden.
"If you do the crime, then you need to pay your time. And you need to do the right thing, especially in the field that they do. You need to practice what you preach," said Jennifer Hutch, a Tallahassee resident.
Deputies say they will not be releasing the name of the inmate involved in this case. They say that is to protect her identity.
Fletcher was released on a $1000.00 bond.
