The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office helped rescue a Georgia couple lost in the woods on Christmas Day.

Wakulla Springs State Park is a popular spot for nature lovers. But on Christmas Day one Georgia couple's trip to the park became more than they bargained for. The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office says the couple, identified only as a 55-year-old Georgia man and his 52-year-old wife, had gone to the park around noon to walk along 6 Mile Trail.

" (They) decided to do some hiking on a trial that they have over there and they kind of got disoriented and ended up getting lost," says Keith Blackmar, spokesman for the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office.

Local authorities were soon notified that the couple was lost in the woods. Then Sheriff's Office along with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and park rangers began their search for the couple. Within two hours, they were found.

The Sheriff's Office says it was able to use the signal coming from the couple's cell phone to track them down and bring them to safety.

Blackmar credits the use of the cell phone with helping rescuers to quickly locate the couple.

"The use of the cell phone is huge because it will allow us to locate you through G.P.S," he says.

Rescuers brought the couple safely out of the woods. The Sheriff's Office say it expects the couple to be okay.

The Sheriff's Office says before hiking, always tell someone where you're going and make sure your cell phones are on you and fully charged.
