DBPR recognizes Florida students for artwork published in children’s eBook

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) today recognized students for their participation in DBPR’s statewide art contest. The event took place at the Florida Capitol where students and their families were commended for the artwork chosen to be published in DBPR’s Children’s eBook.

“On a daily basis I am communicating with licensees to better understand what we can do as a state agency to help to make them successful and one day the idea came to me that we also need to reach out to Florida’s future generation of professionals and business owners,” said Ken Lawson, Secretary of DBPR. “This children’s book has created an opportunity for us to teach children to explore their dreams of what they want to be when they grow up, but also to expose them to real life professionals and business owners who are licensed by DBPR.”

Secretary Lawson was joined by industry leaders and professionals giving students an opportunity to learn more about many different careers.

“It’s great to be a part of an initiative that gets students thinking about what they want to be when they grow up in Florida and talking to them about all the different careers they can pursue, especially becoming a contractor,” said Aaron Boyette, current member of the Construction Industry Licensing Board. “This children’s book is a creative way for DBPR to begin to encourage Florida’s future workforce to start thinking about how they can achieve their dreams when they grow up.”

DBPR invited each of the selected students to be recognized at the Florida Capitol with Secretary Ken Lawson earlier this afternoon. Secretary Lawson personally commended each of the students, followed by a reading of the book aloud with the students and their families. Local dignitaries and stakeholders were also in attendance to represent various professions and businesses in Florida that are licensed by DBPR.

“Educating young students about career opportunities will help build Florida’s next generation of business leaders and we support DBPR’s efforts to encourage children to pursue their dreams,” said Geoff Luebkemann, Vice President of Education & Training for the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association. “The hospitality industry employs more than one million Floridians and FRLA is committed to providing students with the skills necessary to be a successful part of that workforce, in turn spurring the economy and benefitting families across the state.”

DBPR held a statewide art contest for Florida students in second to fifth grade. The art contest challenged students to explore their dreams and illustrate what they want to be when they grow up. Hundreds of Florida students entered the statewide art contest, and the DBPR Children’s eBook, “Follow Your Dreams in Florida, You Can Be Anything You Want to be!” is a collection exemplifying the winning students’ artwork. This eBook explores many of the careers young Floridians dream of pursuing, including professions and businesses regulated by DBPR.

The Children’s eBook, “Follow Your Dreams in Florida, You Can Be Anything You Want to be!” is available for free PDF and iTunes download on the DBPR Kids’ Corner at www.myfloridalicense.com/kids or in the iBookstore. DBPR Secretary Ken Lawson will continue to host events with Florida students throughout the state at local children’s museums.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s mission is to license efficiently and regulate fairly. The Department licenses and regulates more than one million businesses and professionals ranging from hotels and restaurants, real estate agents and certified public accountants to veterinarians, contractors and cosmetologists.
