WINTER HAVEN, Florida -- July 22, 2012
Deputies say a 21-year-old man struck and killed a pedestrian in southwest Florida, then left the scene and stopped for an alcoholic drink.
Polk County deputies arrested Richard Schenfield Friday on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with a fatality, and failure to obtain a valid driver's license.
Deputies pulled Schenfield over as he drove by the crash earlier this week that killed 51-year-old William Moates. He denied knowing anything about the accident. But deputies later said they found evidence under Schenfield's car linking him to the accident.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that investigators also obtained surveillance video from a convenience store that shows Schenfield examining the front of his car, then buying an alcoholic beverage inside. He then checked the car again, apparently looking for damage.
