E-Cigarettes Now Off Limits to Florida Teens

E-cigarettes are now off limits to teens in Florida.

Those under 18 risk fines - even losing their drivers license - if they're caught breaking that new law.

Sidney Wright started smoking at 13.

"That's the next vice I am working on," Wright said with a laugh.

Wright doesn't want her 14 year old son picking up the habit and says a new ban on e-cigarette sales to minors should help.

"I don't think any child should have access to nicotine. It's a terrible habit and it's very hard to break," Wright said. "I know."

The manager at Cig-O-Rama in Tallahassee says e-cigarettes now account for nearly half its business, but she says the new ban on sales to those under 18 won't change anything in her store.

"You have to be 18 to set foot (in the store) first," manager Errika Pascal said. "So when the electronics and vaporizers got introduced we also implemented that policy."

Cig-O-Rama has signs posted on its door "No one under the age of 18 allowed" and has a calendar perched right on the check out counter to make sure there is no miscalculating who's legal and who's not.

"You can never be too careful. And you got some kids that do look like adults so just for any reason you check ID," Pascal said. She said some parents even come in and try to buy them for their kids.

Any store clerk that violates Florida's new ban on e-cigarette sales to minors could face misdemeanor charges and any child under 18 caught with an e-cigarette can face non-criminal sanctions which range from a 25 dollar fine to revocation of their drivers license for some repeat offenders.

"It's a good law and I am pleased to see it," Wright said.

Florida is the latest of more than three dozen states to ban e-cigarette sales to minors.
