Tallahassee, Florida –

To highlight the importance of reading and literacy, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp and Commissioner of Education Dr. Eric J. Smith today joined millions of readers nationwide in “Read for the Record” events in Tallahassee and Miami. Both the Lt. Governor and the Commissioner read the Ezra Jack Keats’ book, The Snowy Day with students at W.T. Moore Elementary and Canopy Oaks Elementary in Tallahassee and at E.W.F. Stirrup Elementary School in Miami to bring attention to the value of reading and the important role it will play in their lives.

“Few things are more uplifting than reading with students and watching their faces light up with wonder and joy as the words spark their imaginations,” said Lt. Governor Kottkamp. “Being able to participate in the Read for the Record event today gave me a front row seat to that wonderful experience and I can’t wait to participate again in the future.”

Jumpstart’s “Read for the Record” strives to set a new world record by having millions of children and adults read the same book on the same day. Now in its fifth year, “Read for the Record” helps raise awareness about the importance of early literacy skills. The event kicks off a year-long campaign that connects preschool children in low income neighborhoods with trained adults to prepare them for success in school and life.

“Read for the Record is a terrific way to reinforce that reading is the foundation upon which learning takes place,” said Commissioner Smith. “The Snowy Day is a wonderful story and I am so pleased that we could join readers throughout the nation to set a new world record and to focus on this essential skill.”

Last year, more than 2 million children and adults helped set the record by taking part in one-day local events throughout the nation. Jumpstart’s “Read for the Record” is presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation to support early education and literacy development.
