A Florida State University law school student is accused of shooting a man at his home on Calhoun Street.

Jefferey Heller is accused of shooting Tyler Thomas in the back at about 2:30am July 28. Thomas told police Heller shot him after he threw a glass of water on him.

Heller told police he doesn't remember anything after about 11:30 the night before when he was at a bar in Midtown.

Heller is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The Tallahassee Police Department is handling the case.

Heller's attorney says they deny the charges and are investigating. "We are grateful Mr. Thomas was released from the hospital and is recovering," defense attorney Tim Jansen said.

A Florida State University spokeswoman says state and federal law prohbits her from commenting on Heller's status at the university.

"The Dean of Students Department is working closely with law enforcement in this case and is taking steps as appropriate to ensure the continued safety and security of our community," said University Communications Director Dr. Jeanette DeDiemar. "In addition, the Dean of Students' Victim's Advocate Program has been working with the victim to provide any assistance he may need."

DeDiemar said in this case and every case, FSU's Office of Student Rights and Repsonsibilities will review a police report for possible violations of the student conduct code and then take appropriate action.
