Tallahassee, FL - Students at FSU didn't hold their tongues when it came to expressing what they want in a new university president.
The firm chosen to find FSU's next president is starting by getting that feedback on campus.
R. William Funk and Associates will lead the charge in recruiting FSU's next president. The president of the firm personally met with campus and community stakeholders. Thursday, students did not hesitate to tell him who they want--or don't want.
Bill Funk asked FSU students Thursday what would they like to see in a university president, and Regina Josephs was quick to raise her hand first.
"Not John Thrasher." She said.
Josephs doesn't like Senator John Thrasher's move to secure funding for FSU to split away from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
She says, "It's kind of like that quote from 'Mean Girls', like, you don't even go here. Like, who are you to decide that this is something that is best for the university. It was a total slap in the face of the students."
FSU Student Danielle Adams, says, "I don't want a president that doesn't care about minorities across the tracks. That makes me feel like they're not going to care about minorities on this campus."
Students spoke freely during the informal-style forum.
Stefano Cavallaro, the FSU Student Body President, says, "Someone who's willing to take the time and listen to the various aspects of FSU, that truly make up our Seminole community."
One student says, "We would also want a president who stand with students and ensures that Florida State continues to be an affordable university for all. He can do that by going against measures that would increase tuition."
One student brought up the fact that former president Eric Barron, who left to head Penn State, made strides for student veterans. She says, "I would like to see someone who is not only willing but passionate about continuing that level of support."
Funk told the students, "Theoretically, these things will be well known as the search evolves."
A forum was held with faculty members immediately after the student forum. A top concern for them was hiring someone with a background in academics.
Bill Funk says the firm hopes to have a new president announced by the beginning of Fall.

Tallahassee, Fla. -- A forum of about 20 students met today at the Turnbull Conference Center to discuss what they are looking for in a new President.
The students were open with their ideas, and were not shy about expressing opinions on what kind of president they want or don't want.
Some concerns discussed in the forum today were wanting someone who is willing to meet with students, supports student equity, and support student veterans services.
Several students expressed their disagreement with FSU dividing from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
This message has been approved by Liz Maryanski, Vice President for University Relations, for distribution to all students

Tallahassee FL- The search is on. Florida State University's Presidential Advisory Committee met for the first time today to discuss the first steps in deciding who should be the next President.
"The presidential search advisory process is really hard to define because it's really based on the process itself," explained FSU Presidential Search Committee Chair Ed Burr. A process where a team of twenty seven people representing every aspect of the University from the students, FSU's Board of Trustees, Faculty, and Alumni Association are all reminded everyone's eyes are on them.
One FSU Graduate Student on the Committee, Sara Saxner told us, "It's absolutely important to have students with this committee, and I think that having us all together with our diverse backgrounds is going to represent the Student Body. Without the students coming in and out we wouldn't have a University."
To FSU's Board of Trustees, Faculty, and Alumni Association. And each member of this committee is reminded all eyes are on them. "This University is on a great path and it's on a path towards success. We want someone to continue those qualities to continue those efforts," Burr told us.
Friday the committee met for the first time to pick one Firm who will be in charge of recruiting. "With that search for them we will lay out a time line which will be an estimate of the process. Could be 60, 90-- could be longer in terms of number of days," Burr said.
This afternoon they made their decision to go with R. William Funk and Associates as their recruitment firm. "I think finding a person that appreciate the culture of Florida State of Tallahassee who recognizes the importance of the community- -who has that engagement level is very important," Saxner said.
