The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) hosted a Florida Boating Advisory Council (BAC) meeting recently in Tallahassee. At the meeting, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. William Baumgartner presented several awards.
“Rear Adm. Baumgartner’s visit was an honor,” said Col. Jim Brown, director of FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement. “We value our partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and recognize that everyone benefits from working together on boating safety efforts.”
Baumgartner presented Meritorious Team Commendations to all who worked on the May 2010 National Safe Boating Week "Life Jackets for Life Tour," a statewide campaign designed to promote boating safety.
Recipients who attended the meeting included West Marine and Revere Supply Company – two of FWC’s boating partners – and FWC staff. The commendations honored the team members’ promotion of life jacket use, noting their “remarkable stamina and operational commitment.”
“These commendations reflect the hard work and strong partnerships between the U.S. Coast Guard, Revere, West Marine and the FWC,” Baumgartner said. “Florida boaters are safer and better educated because of the continued efforts of these groups.”
Brown commented on the commendations as well. “Just as cooperative efforts between with U.S. Coast Guard make the waterways safer for Florida boaters, so do partnerships with private companies, like Revere and West Marine,” he said.
The FWC continually works with the U.S. Coast Guard, West Marine and Revere Supply Company on other boating safety projects.
At the meeting, which was open to the public, a variety of topics were covered that affect boating in Florida, including an anchoring and mooring pilot program and commercial para-sailing.
The 18-member BAC considers issues affecting the boating community and advises the FWC and the Department of Community Affairs. It is made up of representatives from various boating interests and the Florida Senate and House, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, Inland Navigations Districts, Department of Environmental Protection and the FWC.
