Tallahassee Fallen Firefighter Memorial Vandalized [SLIDE SHOW]

UPDATED 11.13.2012 by Julie Montanaro

Vandals struck at a Tallahassee fire station and chose a surprising target. It was a memorial to fallen firefighters.

The concrete statue lies in pieces at fire station four. It doesn't look like much now, but it meant a lot to the firefighters here.

"It was heartbreaking. Something we put out there for us to show the fellowship of the the fire service and now it's been destroyed," said LT Michael O'Grady.

O'Grady and several of his buddies posed for a picture at the memorial back on 9-11.

Firefighters say sometime Monday, someone pushed the 200 pound statue off its pedestal.

"It's actually affixed to the pedestal with concrete and mortar," Tallahassee Fire Department Spokesman Mike Bellamy said.
"You'd have to really get a really good running start to get that off that pedestal."

The statue was donated by a motorcycle club called Fire and Iron back on September 11, 2010.

It stood between two flag poles outside this busy station at the corner of Pensacola and Appleyard.

Damage is estimated at $1000.

"The statue itself, you know, we can replace that. It's what it stand for," Bellamy said.

Tallahassee Police are investigating.
