The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office is hosting several firearms programs at the WCSO Training Center and Shooting Range.
· The May and June Personal Protection and Firearms Safety Courses are full but another class has been scheduled for Saturday, July 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $60 for non-members and $50 for members. There are still a few openings left.
· The sheriff’s office is also hosting an Intermediate Course of Instruction on Carrying a Concealed Weapon. The class is limited to 15 students on Saturday, June 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $60 and it will be held at the training center. Students will need to bring their handgun and 100 rounds of ammunition. The classroom segment will include a review of legal issues; shoot and don’t shoot situations; types of weapons; evaluation of your weapon; manner of carrying and concealing your weapon; how to shoot; and different types of ammunition. There are 10 openings left.
The range segment will include: sight-in; adjust sights or adjust point of aim; seven yard line; full body targets; removing your weapon from concealment; shoot and don’t shoot utilizing full body; good guy-bad guy targets; move and shoot; and steel targets.
Certified WCSO law enforcement instructors will teach the course. To register for the course, contact Major Larry Massa at (850) 745-7105.
· An AR 15 Rifle Instruction Course will be held Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WCSO Training Center and Shooting Range, Sopchoppy, FL. The cost is $60 for non-members and discounts are available for members. There are five openings left.
The Basic AR 15/M 16 course introduces the student to the two rifle platforms including field stripping, maintenance and functioning. Shooting will be performed from 25 yards and 50 yards. Final shooting will be the same as the 40 round law enforcement qualification course.
Participants should have an AR style rifle, two magazines with 20 round capacity or greater and 200 rounds of ammunition. However, if you don’t own an AR and would like to participate, please contact the range for availability of a loaner by calling (850) 745-7290.
Participants will have an opportunity to shoot a full automatic M 16 rifle. This is a fee-based course with discounts offered to range members. WCSO Law Enforcement Certified Instructors and AR 15 Armors will teach the course.
