Senate President Mike Haridopolos continued setting himself up for a run for the United States Senate in 2012 Thursday, launching a committee to begin racing money for the race. The committee, dubbed “Friends of Mike H” on the Website www.mike2012.com, is the clear sign yet that Haridopolos is planning to run for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson next year. As the lone statewide Democratic elected official, Nelson has emerged as the Republican Party of Florida’s top target after an election cycle in 2010 that saw them win the governor’s race, every seat on the state Cabinet and enough seats in the Legislature to hold veto-proof supermajorities. Democrats have said recently that they intend to vigorously defend Nelson. Other rumored Republican candidates include former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, who held the seat occupied now by Sen. Marco Rubio for a little over a year.
