Associated Press Release
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- A Bradenton man has been charged in the 2009 shooting death of a pregnant woman.
Twenty-eight-year-old Everrick Houston was arraigned Friday in connection with the shooting of 19-year-old Crystal Johnson. She was seven months pregnant. Her daughter was delivered but died at the hospital. Friday marked the fourth anniversary of Johnson's death.
Authorities say two gunmen busted into Johnson's apartment and opened fire. Her boyfriend fired back and struck one of the suspects. Shortly after, authorities say Houston went to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Detectives believe the home invasion was motivated by drugs.
The Bradenton Herald reports Houston was originally charged with Johnson's murder in 2009 but the charges were dropped after a judge ruled that law enforcement illegally acquired blood samples from his clothing linking him to the crime.
