TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida House is saying no to bringing major casinos to South Florida.

Rep. Robert Schenck, R-Spring Hill, and chairman of the House committee looking at gambling, rolled out a comprehensive gambling bill on Monday evening. The lengthy bill calls for an overhaul of how gambling is regulated in the state and would create a statewide gaming commission.

But it does not authorize the creation of two Las Vegas-styled casinos.

A Senate proposal, by contrast, would allow casinos in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

The House also plans to pursue a constitutional amendment that would require voter approval for any future expansion of gambling.

Schenck in a statement said his bill would create a "strong gaming commission" and "clean up significant and glaring loopholes in current law."

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Florida Senate is rolling out a sweeping gambling proposal that would allow the creation of two new casinos in South Florida and expand the use of slot machines across the state.

A Senate committee released the proposal on Monday.

The Senate is also proposing a constitutional amendment that would require a statewide vote before any additional expansion of gambling is authorized. It would not stop the new casinos, or the addition of slot machines at dog and horse tracks.

The measure would also create a new agency to regulate gambling.

It's unclear, however, if the Republican-controlled Legislature will pass the bills. Past efforts to authorize casinos have been defeated in the House.

An anti-casino group blasted the proposed bill and called it a "sell out" to gambling interests.
