Charlotte, NC (AP) -- May 18, 2012 --

Florida A&M's president says the hazing death of a marching band member is tragic, but promised an alumni group in North Carolina that the celebrated band would return.

James Ammons said this week that he would keep the Marching 100 off the field in the 2012-13 academic year while the university institutes strong anti-hazing measures. Ammons spoke to the alumni group in Charlotte on Friday.

Ammons called the death of 26-year-old drum major Robert Champion heartbreaking. But he also says the band will always be a point of pride for the school.

The band was indefinitely suspended shortly after Champion died on Nov. 19 during a hazing incident on a bus after a football game. Eleven band members have been charged with felony hazing and two are charged with misdemeanors.

I hope to never see the vulgar routines this band performs. If they do return maybe they will have a little class and a band that can play instead of look like they need to be in a strip joint. It will always be a murder that happened on that bus not a hazing!Everyone on the bus is guilty of it!

I wish them luck but if the chaampman family sues FAMU, the school may not have the money to even pay the janators let alone hold classes. I know if it was my child and none memnbers hazed him i would have heads role from schools dean down to band director and everyone inbetween.

Like the phoenix the marching 100 will rise from the ashes of this tragedy. Go Rattlers!

Get rid of Ammons as he is just as guilty and responsible. Why is he traveling around instead of being on campus doing some work? He's probably begging students to come to FAMU.

I eagerly look forward to the Marching 100 Band's return. And when they do return, I will be out there with a HUGE "Welcome Back 100" banner. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy myself some good ole exciting Rattler football. I've already ordered season tickets and encourage others to do the same thing. GO FAMU!!

Unless there is a completely house cleaning of all the admin, the corruption will continue and nothing will change.

I bet Ammons won't be there when the band returns.
  • by band hazing activity threatens your job and livelyhood, why risk it. on May 18, 2012 at 07:19 PM
Why as an employee of Famu would you want to reinstate the band, when they haze your job is threaten not theirs? And many statements have been posted that lead to the conclusion that many have no intention of stopping the hazing. Why would you want to risk you careers for a student body that have very clearly shown you they think nothing of causing dedicated teachers to loose their jobs and retirements.

Ammons is so glib in the accompanying picture, he should be slapped in the face. All he cares about is alumni money. FAMU needs new leadership. Never forget Robert Champion.

And when will the band return all their trophies and awards that they got under fraud for non-students competing? When will Ammons be fired and White made to answer to his complicity to the scandal? White should have his pension taken away and charged with accessory to the manslaughter for allowing the hazing to continue for years without check. When will everyone who was on the bus be charged?
