TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) --
Florida's first gang census shows the state has 1,403 documented gangs with 56,200 members, associates and suspected members.
That's nearly the population of the city of Homestead.
Attorney General Bill McCollum released his annual Gang
Reduction Strategy Report on Wednesday, December 22. For the first time it includes gang statistics from all 67 Florida counties.
McCollum said the survey will help Florida's fight against gang
activity because it'll serve as a baseline for measuring future
Since the gang reduction strategy began in 2007 the statewide
prosecutor's office has charged more than 170 gang members. About
110 of those defendants have received sentences totaling more than
950 years in prison.
