Florida Gov. Rick Scott is the reason the state is trying to identify and purge non-U.S. citizens from the voter rolls.
Former Secretary of State Kurt Browning told The Associated Press that Scott last year asked whether Florida voter rolls had non U.S. citizens on them and if those people were voting.
Browning says when he pointed out that people who register can be charged with a crime if they falsely claim citizenship, the governor told him that "people lie."
He says the conversation with Scott led state election officials to begin working to identify ineligible voters.
Browning says it was his decision to not inform local election supervisors right away about the attempts to identify non U.S. citizens because he wanted to make sure the information was accurate.
