Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is fighting for her life after a gunman goes on a shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona Saturday.
An Arizona surgeon says representative Gabrielle Giffords remains in critical condition and is in a medically induced coma... but she is able to respond to doctors commands, making them optimistic about her recovery.
Authorities say the 40-year-old, who was shot in the head, was targeted at a public gathering outside a busy supermarket yesterday. 19 people including Giffords were wounded but six of those people were killed.
22-year-old Jared Loughner is currently in custody. Former Congressman Allen Boyd has known Giffords for years and I spoke to him on the phone this morning to tell us about his fellow democratic acquaintance.
Former Congressman Allen Boyd says, "Gabby Giffords is a wonderful wonderful person. I know some members of her family, I know her very well personally and we all hope and pray that she will have a very speedy and full recovery."
A federal judge and a 9-year-old girl were among the fatalities.
Authorities have recently cleared a second person of interest in the case and doctors say Giffords is on a ventilator and her eyes are closed but she is able to communicate non-verbally.
