BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) -- A man was arrested after authorities say he released animals at a southwest Florida roadside attraction.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office reports that an employee arrived at the Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs Monday morning and found the back gate sawed open. Inside, he found locks cut off cages and deer, pigs and birds roaming free.

The employee eventually found 58-year-old Steven Trew and held him until deputies arrived. Trew, apparently frustrated that the park would soon close, wanted to set the animals free. He was charged with burglary of a dwelling and damage to property with criminal mischief.

One deer was killed in a nearby vehicle crash and another was still missing. No other animals left the property.

The park's owner, David Piper, said he was glad the mountain lion and bobcat didn't leave their open cages.
