Garbage Fee Proposal

Leon County Commissioners voted to go forward in creating a plan to make curbside garbage service mandatory within unincorporated areas outside of Tallahassee city limits.

Currently, those residents can either pay Waste Management for curbside service or use the county's bulky-items disposal centers.

If the plan goes through, homes in the unincorporated areas will have to pay about $210 for curbside service.

Using the disposal centers are free at this time. But, under the plan, residents would have to start paying to use the centers.

Administrators say the fee at the disposal centers would help pay for the costs to run the centers.

The fee amount is to be determined and will be based on how much a person throws away.

The commission will hold public hearings on the issue before taking any action.

If approved, the changes would not go into effect until 2013.

We will keep you posted.

As for electricity ...that's how govt works. And yet, folks turn around and vote for big govt. The Socialist Party of Amerika...aka Democrats, love to give you your electricity. Guess what...they'll also be ecstatic to help you with your garbage.

People will just start burning garbage...From what I remember, the proposed "trash plant"(not the proposed incinerator that was to be placed down off of gaines st.) that used plasma arc technology to burn waste into an inert gas which could then be used for power disappeared for some reason. We know the reason...really. So, be prepared for weekend burnings in your favorite neck of the woods.

Good idea. But you had better step up enforcement within the National Forest and County parks while your at it. There are already lowlifes who use them as a personal dump and this will only increase the numbers....

I think everyone should have an option to choose, the same goes for electricity. They charge us whatever they want and we don't have a chose. It's a monopoly.

Look - this is crazy. I know these are two different extremes but look at Egypt. The people got tired of things and are standing up and they will be heard because their country is literally coming to a stop. Our problem is we've gotten lazy and we don't fight for what's right anymore. Go to the meeting. Be heard.

Well, people scream about reducing gov't spending and fewer taxes, so when the gov't can't raise taxes they charge "fees" to provide you the same service. Though this plan sounds fishy, like WM is in cahoots with the county commissioners. Force people to use their services....did county residents even say they want trash service? Most I know are perfectly happy with the system as is.

This is a joke! My family already pays WAY too much for WM pickup and they don't offer a lower plan. We pay around $53 every three months for weekly pickups of recycle (which they pickup for free because they make money off of it) and refuse. We have roughly 3/4 of a bag of refuse weekly and fill our recycle bins weekly. I have asked about a smaller refuse bin and pricing. They offer larger cans and higher pricing, but won't offer lower ones. It would take us probably 2.5 months to fill the current can issued, but we pay as if we fill it up weekly. A neighborhood dumpster almost makes more sense.
