News Release: City of Gretna

In recent years, the Gretna Police Department launched a three step program to reduce crime similar to predictive policing. The program consists of:

Proactive and Preventive Policing – Each member of the Gretna Police Department is given a goal to ensure proactive focused patrol while on duty. This is also a unique method as it is dictated by emerging crime patterns. Based on those patterns, the command staff distributes resources to the “hot zones” where potential criminal activity exist.

Intelligence Led Policing – A report compiled which tracks offenses and who may be the likely offender. This intelligence is then shared within the agency and the command staff effectively deploys resources to those areas.

Community Policing – Communication with community leaders is a well-recognized policing method and a proactive technique to combat crime. This prevention program is only as effective as the information gathered as it decreases the chances of crime happening to you.

According to statistics compiled by FDLE crimes in the City of Gretna fell by -40.5% and a reported crime index 22%. Carlos De La Cruz, Chief for the Gretna Police Department, explains “This is a step in the right direction, and our efforts to reduce crime are proving successful.” Chief De La Cruz credits the success of this program to the neighborhood leaders that play a critical part in crime prevention and to the members of the Department that patrol the streets and diligently follow up on their cases.
