Tampa, FL (AP) - High winds and rough seas are keeping a
cruise ship and six cargo ships from getting into Tampa Bay.
The U.S. Coast Guard said Monday the Carnival Inspiration and
the cargo vessels are hampered by high wind and 10- to 15-foot
swells. That makes it harder for the local pilots to safely board
the ships, then negotiate the pylons of the Sunshine Skyway bridge,
which spans the mouth of the bay.
A Carnival spokesman said the 2,000-passenger, 855-foot
Inspiration was due in to the port in downtown Tampa at around 8
Petty Officer 1st Class Mariana O'Leary of the U.S. Coast Guard
said the ships are anchored 12 miles west of the bridge. She said
they could be in as soon as Monday night.
