May 31, 2012

This evening at 4:45 pm, Tallahassee Fire Department units from Stations 9, 2, 8 and 1 responded to a single story house fire in the 4700 Block of Stoney Trace. The fire was called in by a neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the roof of the house. Firefighters could see heavy smoke as they approached the house. Firefighters forced
entry into the house, advanced two hose lines and extinguished the fire in ten minutes. A second fire crew searched the home to ensure that all occupants were safely out of the structure. The home was vacant at the time of the fire. The fire was caused by a lightning
strike and caused heavy fire damage to the kitchen as well as smoke damage throughout the house. Damage estimates were around $70,000 and there were no injuries reported at the fire. There were six residents displaced due to the extent of the damages. The Red
Cross was called out to assist the family.

At around 6:30 p.m., Units from Stations 2, 8 and 1 responded to the report of a house fire in the 3000 Block of Cloudland Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters forced entry and discovered heavy smoke and fire in the main living room of a two-story single family home. Neighbors who called the fire in reported that an elderly man lived in the home
alone. Firefighters from Station 2 quickly searched the home while extinguishing the fire. Within minutes, an unconscious male patient was discovered in a back room of the house. Firefighter/Paramedics removed the patient to the back yard and began providing care. Patient care was quickly transferred to Leon County EMS. The patient was transferred with one firefighter/paramedic on board to a landing zone where he was airlifted to TMH and then driven by ambulance to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL in fair condition. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and ATF. Damages from the fire are estimated at $120,000 and there were no other injuries reported at the fire.

Funny how when there is an article about paying firefighters, so many are quick to spout off about how they do nothing. Here we have back to back fires with an elderly gentleman's life saved and nobody has much to say.
