Tallahassee, FL - They wanted them to be tough.
David Ramsay, the Innovation Park Audit Committee Chairman, says,
"There are audits and then there are audits. We probably know that better than a lot of folks."
Auditors presented their final report Tuesday to the Leon County Research and Development Authority's audit committee... a report that spans the 2009-2010 fiscal year ... .
"I believe we have turned the corner."
Auditors had 15 recommendations last year - 11 of them were considered serious - This year there are eight recommendations ... and only one is considered crucial ... updating the accounting policies and procedures manual.
"That's due to the hard work fo really everybody."
The audit covers the time that Innovation Park discovered its bookkeeper had embezzled nearly 650-thousand dollars. Shanna Lewis began serving an eight and a half year federal prison sentence in November.
Among the auditors findings and recommendations: keeping blank checks locked in a cabinet, and not just in a locked office... maintaining documentation of hiring and firing of employees in each employee's personnel file... and following complex password management.
Innovation Park's Executive Director Catherine Kunst, /Ph.D.says,
"I wish it were perfect, of course. There was certainly so much cleanup that happened before my position was recruited. I'm really grateful for all the hard work."
Auditors say they expect things to be even better next year.
The audit committee will present the final audit report to the full Innovation Park Board on April 5th.
