JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A suspect is in custody after an officer was injured following a shooting in the Lackawanna neighborhood on the Westside.
Jacksonville Fire & Rescue said paramedics took Officer Andrew Benson to UF Health with non life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the arm during a traffic stop Wednesday.
Police say the officer attempted to pull over a driver on Edison Avenue for a seatbelt violation. The driver, now identified at Donald Lee Goins, 33, continued traveling for several blocks before stopping on Cherokee Street.
As Benson exited his vehicle, police say Goins pointed a gun out of the drivers side window and shot Benson in the arm. Benson was able to take cover and return fire.
Police say Goins then drove away from the scene and abandoned his car near Beaver Street. Benson stayed at the scene and was transported to UF Health.
"Every resource at our disposal is coming for him," said Undersheriff Dwain Senterfitt just after 8 PM as police continued their search.
Senterfitt promised an aggressive hunt for the gunman, which resulted in Goins arrest hours later. He was found inside a home in Springfield.
Sheriff John Rutherford visited Benson at the hospital and said he is doing well, according to Senterfitt.
Action News reporter Romney Smith stayed at UF Hospital where officers gathered outside.
Several officers walked out of the hospital and gave Action News crews a thumbs up.
Detectives continued to search for evidence at the scene until the road was opened just after 11:30 p.m.
