The race for Circuit Judge for Florida's second circuit came down to two Tallahassee women attorneys, Karen Gievers and Barbara Hobbs.

Over 120,000 votes were cast as of 10:30pm Tuesday night.

Karen Gievers captured 59 percent of the votes while Barbara Hobbs has 41 percent.

So it looks like Gievers will be the newest circuit judge for Florida's second circuit.

Gievers had an election watch party in Tallahassee and was surrounded by close fiends, family and community supporters.

"Those in the legal community always think that they are the ones that know what being a judge is all about, but it also depend on what our citizens think because our judicial branch is for citizens not just for lawyers, for the community itself," said Gievers.

Gievers has made a name for herself as an advocate for abused and neglected children. She was named one of the "Top Ten Lawyers in America" by the National Law Journal in 2000.

Barbara Hobbs did not want to comment at this time.

Karen Gievers devotedly donated hours and hours of her time and expertise on behalf of the vulnerable children of Florida. She was a passionate advocate, and she consistently demonstrated great integrity and intellect. She'll be a concerned and conscientious judge. There's nothing wrong with that.

Only 10% of Ms. Gievers' campaign contributions came from within the Second Judicial Circuit. She provided 79% ($298,000) and her trial lawyer buddies from down state provided 11% ($42,690).

Get ready to experience a new level of "judicial activism" once Ms. Gievers takes the bench. Thank goodness she will be a trial court judge, not an appellate judge. I sure hope she doesn't replace Judge Sjostrom, the judge who presently handles dependency court. She needs an assignment where she can't do too much harm. Activist judges. Sheesh!

Karen Gievers' election to the Circuit Court bench is a tragedy. Ms. Gievers repeatedly applied for various judicial appointments and her own peers who served on the judicial nominating commissions never recommended her for any appointments.

Ms. Gievers and her trial lawyer friends from outside the 2nd Judicial Circuit bought her a judgeship. Ms. Gievers contributed nearly $300,000 to her own race.
