News Release: LCPD
On Saturday, May 10, 2014, at approximately 11:30am the Lake City Police Department responded to a traffic crash near the intersection of State Road 47 and SW Bascom Norris Dr.
Officers arrived to find a motorcycle had lost control and its driver, Mr. Charles Ervin Holt (63) of Live Oak, had been seriously injured.
An LCPD Traffic Homicide Investigator (THI) responded to the scene. After examining physical evidence and conducting interviews, it was determined Holt had lost control of his motorcycle while riding north on SR-47 as part of a charity “Poker Run” event. The exact reason he lost control is unknown.
Other riders in the group stated the head of the “pack” began to slow as they approached the intersection of SW Bascom Norris Rd. One witness stated Holt appeared to have been distracted and locked up his brakes when he saw the group slowing in front of him. Evidence at the scene indicated Holt’s motorcycle slid for a short distance and lost control. The motorcycle leaned to one side and the right foot peg made contact with the pavement, causing Holt to be ejected forward.
Holt was in critical condition when he was flown to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he was later succumbed to his injuries. Holt was not wearing a helmet, and it was later discovered that he did not have the proper driver’s license endorsement to operate a motorcycle in the State of Florida.
“Our hearts go out to Mr. Holt’s family and his fellow riders that day,” said Chief Argatha Gilmore. “It was a sad turn of events for those out riding for a cause greater than themselves.”
It was also confirmed by the traffic homicide investigator investigating this accident no other riders in this group contributed to the crash.
