LCSO Lieutenant Honored for Years of Crime Prevention

July 12, 2012 by Julie Montanaro

A deputy will be honored tonight for years of fighting crime ... before it ever happens.

Nancy Burns is a lieutenant with the Leon County Sheriff's Office. She has spent her entire 28 year career trying to prevent crime.

Burns was the first to introduce McGruff the crime dog to children in Leon County. Burns has worked with Crime Stoppers and Child Lures. She has spent countless hours teaching homeowners and businesses how to safeguard their property and teaching women and children to safeguard their lives.

"My thing has always been, if one person out of the hundreds did not get involved in a crime or did not become a victim because of something I taught them, then I did my job," LT Burns said.

Tonight, Burns will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency.
