Associated Press Release

PALM COAST, Fla. (AP) -- Sheriff's deputies in northeast Florida say they've detonated a live hand grenade found at a Palm Coast intersection.

The deputies responded to a call about the object in the road about 6 p.m. Tuesday. They closed the intersection and diverted traffic and pedestrians away from the area.

The Flagler County deputies contacted nearby St. Johns County, which sent its bomb squad to remove the device. It was placed in a bomb trailer and taken to an undisclosed location where a controlled detonation was performed.

Officials say the grenade appeared to be a live device with its safety locking pin and "spoon" in place.

The grenade was discovered around the same time that two suspicious devices were found at Jacksonville International Airport, which was shut down for almost five hours.
